  • Hearing award-winning Naomi tell a story is like having a front porch conversation with the poet of the family.

  • Award-winning Naomi writes her own material based on her experiences growing up and living, as she describes it, at the “foot of the mountain.”  Her beautifully crafted stories often evoke a range of emotions and ultimately delight her listeners.

  • Naomi is an award-winning storyteller who writes her own material based on her experiences growing up and living in the South-Central portion of the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains. Her stories often involve her family, particularly her Granny. She has a way of pondering the ordinary  while highlighting the extraordinary in our lives. She believes that when we listen to each other’s story we connect in meaningful ways.

March 2019 International Mountain Symposium - Appalachian State University – proposal accepted

  • Aunt Betts’ Chicken Tonic and Granny’s Pet Skunk (oral presentation) On March 12, 2019, the Center for Appalachian Studies, in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of International Education and Development, brought together mountain studies scholars from Austria, France, Scotland, Switzerland, and Wales. They joined Appalachian State faculty and students for a one-day scholarly exchange of research about the Appalachian Mountains and other mountains around the world. The symposium concluded with an evening reading of Appalachian literature; performances of traditional music and dance; and a square dance.
